Electrical Unit Converter: W, kW, BTU, kWh, A, V
Convert watts, kilowatts, BTU per hour, kilowatt-hours, amps and volts, plus the gas pressure, temperature and fuel volume units on generator spec sheets.
The Converters
Type a number in either field of a pair and the other field converts as you type; the figures are rounded for reading.
One kilowatt is 3,412.14 BTU per hour, and one US gallon is 3.78541 litres.
An estimate from typical figures and the manufacturer's published numbers; a licensed electrician's load calculation on site decides.
How This Estimate Works
Each converter multiplies or divides by the standard definition of the units:
- One kilowatt is 3,412.14 BTU per hour.
- One kilowatt is 1,000 watts, and one kilowatt-hour that many watt-hours.
- One cubic foot is 0.028317 cubic metres.
- One US gallon is 3.78541 litres.
- One inch of water column is 0.24884 kilopascals, the pressure unit on gas spec sheets.
- Degrees Celsius are degrees Fahrenheit minus 32, times 5, divided by 9.
- Amps and kilowatts convert on a single-phase circuit at the voltage you choose, as the kW, amps and volts converter does.
For reference only, Natural Resources Canada gives these natural gas equivalences: one cubic metre of natural gas is about 0.038 gigajoules, and one gigajoule has the same energy as 27 litres of fuel oil, 39 litres of propane, 26 litres of gasoline or 277 kilowatt-hours of electricity. The converters do not use them. Figures checked on 2026-09-25. Natural Resources Canada →
The figures are rounded for reading. A licensed electrician's load calculation or site visit decides what a circuit, a service or a generator needs.
