About the home standby generators Family

Five of the six units belong to the RCL series and run from 24 to 60 kW. They share the RDC2 controller, which can also run a KOHLER RXT transfer switch. The 24, 30 and 38 kW units use a 2.2 L engine, turbocharged on the two larger ones, and the 48 and 60 kW units use a 6.2 L V8. The sixth unit, the 150ERESC, has an 8.8 L turbocharged engine and an APM402 controller, and its manuals are the ones KOHLER writes for its industrial generator sets. Every sheet says the unit can be switched between natural gas and propane in the field.

The two output columns give the 120/240 V single-phase rating, which is also the figure each product page shows. The sound column is the sheet figure for normal operation, taken 7 m from the unit at the quietest of 8 measuring points, so other spots around it may measure louder. Dimensions also come from the sheets. For the 24, 30 and 38 kW units the weight is the page's pound figure in kilograms, because those sheets give a shipping weight that counts the packaging. The other three weights are the sheets' wet figures, with the engine fluids in. Where a page and its sheet differ, the table follows the sheet and the sources note records both.

Every sheet lists a standard warranty of 5 years or 2,000 hours. The RCL sheets also offer extended 7 year and 10 year coverage, and a load shed kit that works with a KOHLER RDT or RXT switch. Five of the six product pages say the transfer switch is sold separately. The 24RCLA page marks it as included, but no page or sheet in this family gives a switch rating, so the table has no switch column.

Canadian Context

Each sheet names the heaters KOHLER recommends for cold weather. The 24, 30 and 38 kW sheets recommend a block heater or an oil pan heater below 0 °C, and both heaters below minus 18 °C. The 48 and 60 kW sheets recommend their block heater below 0 °C and also offer a battery heater. On the 150ERESC sheet, the crankcase ventilation heater is the one recommended below 0 °C. Winters in Hamilton and Niagara pass that mark often, so the electrician plans a circuit to the pad for whichever heater the unit gets.

The 24, 30 and 38 kW sheets print cULus listed, and the 48 kW, 60 kW and 150ERESC sheets print cUL/UL 2200 listed with CSA certification. Those Canadian marks are why every row reads Listed for Canada; the product pages show no mark in their own text. KOHLER uses one website for the United States and Canada, and each sheet gives a single sales and service phone line for both countries. Before ordering, we confirm with the supplier that the exact unit is built for the Canadian market.

At full load on natural gas, the sheets list 8.5 cubic metres an hour for the 24RCLA, 28.7 for the 60RCLB and 55.7 for the 150ERESC. A licensed gas fitter checks that the meter and the piping can deliver that much. Before the unit is wired into the house, the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) must receive a notification of work. Once ESA has reviewed the work and passed it, the person who filed receives a Certificate of Acceptance.

The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) notification of work is filed before the work starts. When the installation is done, ESA inspects it and issues a Certificate of Acceptance once it passes. Where the unit burns natural gas or propane, a licensed gas fitter makes the gas connection. Where a meter or a service entrance switch is involved, the local utility does its part of the work.
