PowerProtect home standby generators
This page lists the PowerProtect home standby generators Briggs and Stratton sells for houses, in the four lines its listing shows, with each model's published figures. All of them burn natural gas or propane, and the transfer switch is sold separately.
About the PowerProtect Family
Briggs and Stratton's listing groups its home standby units into four lines, named PowerProtect, PowerProtect+, PowerProtect DX and PowerProtect+ DX. Each model is named for its output of 13, 18, 22 or 26 kW, and every spec sheet names a Vanguard engine. On the spec sheets, both DX lines carry a 10-year limited warranty and the other two lines carry 7 years. The table keeps each line together and runs from the smallest unit to the largest.
Briggs and Stratton measures sound under ISO 3744 at 7 m with the unit in normal operation, and its spec sheets give 65 to 69 dBA for the units in this table. The 13 kW units take up the least ground, a footprint of 719 by 646 mm, and stand 956 mm tall. The spec sheet linked from the PowerProtect 18 kW page answered 404 when we checked it, so that row shows only what the product page prints, with the inches and pounds converted to metric.

Canadian Context
Every spec sheet behind this table marks the unit cUL as well as UL, and every product page says the generator is rated or listed to UL 2200 and to CSA standard C22.2 No. 100, in its 2014 edition. The PowerProtect 18 kW has no spec sheet, so its row rests on that CSA statement alone. On natural gas, the 26 kW units drop to 24 kW and the 13 kW units to 11.5 kW, while the 18 and 22 kW units make the same power on both fuels. For a home on the gas main, read the natural gas column when sizing.
The newer spec sheets give minus 1 °C as the lowest operating temperature with no warmers fitted, and minus 28 °C once the cold start battery and the battery, fuel regulator and oil warmers are installed. The older sheets give minus 28 °C without that condition. Every sheet lists an engine oil heater or warmer as an accessory, and the transfer switch page sells a cold weather kit, with a battery warmer and two oil heaters, for select home units of 10 to 26 kW. The electrician can fit these during the installation.
Briggs and Stratton sells these generators without a transfer switch, so the switch is chosen with us for the home's electrical service. A service entrance rated switch is wired in after the utility meter and ahead of the panel, so the utility must cut the supply and restore it afterward. A licensed gas fitter runs the gas line and confirms the meter can carry the generator. Before a generator is wired in for good, the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) has to receive a notification of the work, and the transfer switch stops the generator from feeding power out onto the grid.
The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) notification of work is filed before the work starts. When the installation is done, ESA inspects it and issues a Certificate of Acceptance once it passes. Where the unit burns natural gas or propane, a licensed gas fitter makes the gas connection. Where a meter or a service entrance switch is involved, the local utility does its part of the work.

It depends on the size. The spec sheets rate the 26 kW units at 26 kW on propane and 24 kW on natural gas, and the 13 kW units at 13 kW and 11.5 kW. The 18 and 22 kW units make the same power on both fuels. Houses on the gas main should go by the natural gas figure.
The newer spec sheets say the unit runs down to minus 1 °C with no warmers, and down to minus 28 °C with the cold start battery and the battery, fuel regulator and oil warmers installed. The warmers are extra, and every spec sheet lists an oil heater or warmer as an accessory. For winters in Hamilton and Niagara, it makes sense to plan for them from the start.
No. Briggs and Stratton sells the generators on their own, so the transfer switch is chosen with us. The right size follows your electrical service. If the switch is service entrance rated, it is wired in right after the utility meter, so the utility must cut the supply while it goes in.
Sometimes. Each spec sheet gives the inlet gas pressure the unit requires and lists its gas use at full load, which climbs as the units get bigger. On a long run, or with a small meter, the supply can come up short. A licensed gas fitter measures the run and checks the meter and pipe size before the unit goes in.
