Common Questions
What is a GenerLink and how does it work?
A GenerLink is a meter-mounted transfer switch that connects your portable generator directly to your homes electrical system through the meter base. It eliminates the need for a sub-panel or traditional transfer switch, making it the most affordable way to connect a portable generator safely.
Can a portable generator power my whole house?
Most portable generators (3,000 - 7,500 watts) can power essential circuits like the fridge, sump pump, furnace fan, and some lights. For whole-home backup including A/C and electric ranges, you will need a standby generator rated at 20kW or more.
How much does a standby generator cost installed?
A whole-home standby generator in the Hamilton and Niagara region typically costs between $5,000 and $15,000 installed, depending on the size (kW rating), fuel type (natural gas or propane), and distance from your electrical panel. This includes the generator, transfer switch, ESA permit, and all installation labour.
Do I need an electrician to install a generator?
Yes. In Ontario, connecting any generator to your home requires a licensed electrician and an ESA permit. This applies to both standby and portable generator hookups (transfer switches and GenerLinks). Never backfeed a generator into your panel without a proper transfer device — it is illegal and extremely dangerous.
