KOHLER air-cooled home standby generators
This page lists the air-cooled KOHLER home standby generators on the manufacturer's home generators listing, with the figures KOHLER prints for each model. All six burn natural gas or propane, and the base units come without a transfer switch.
About the home standby generators Family
The air-cooled units on KOHLER's listing come in three series. The 10RESV and 12RESV are compact units that share one spec sheet and run the RDC2 controller. The 12RES has its own spec sheet and the ADC-RES controller. The RCA series covers 14, 20 and 26 kW, also on the RDC2. On propane the six units run from 10 kW to 26 kW. Each spec sheet measures sound 7 m from the unit, and at full speed these read 65 to 71 dB(A).
Five of the six, all but the 12RES, are also sold with a KOHLER RXT automatic transfer switch included. Those bundles carry the same model number with an L added, such as 14RCAL. Their pages repeat the base unit's ratings and documents and add the weight of the switch, so this table folds each bundle into its base unit's row and names the switch in a note. Without the bundle, the switch is bought separately, and the spec sheets point to KOHLER's RXT and RDT switch models.

Canadian Context
The product pages show no certification mark in their visible text, so this table takes the marks from the spec sheets. The 10RESV, 12RESV and 12RES sheets print cUL/UL 2200, the 14RCA and 20RCA sheets print UL 2200/cUL, and the 26RCA sheet prints cULus. The c in each of those marks stands for Canada, so every row here reads as listed for Canada. The sheets also give one phone line for sales and service in the US and Canada. Before ordering, we confirm the exact unit with you.
The RCA spec sheets recommend their cold weather kit below 0 °C and a battery heater below minus 17 °C, and they say not to fit the carburetor heater together with the kit. The 10RESV and 12RESV sheet lists no cold weather kit; it recommends a carburetor heater for starting below 0 °C. The 12RES sheet does the same and also lists a battery heater. That is why the cold weather column says yes for the three RCA units and not published for the other three.
For a house on the gas main, size the unit from its natural gas rating: the 20RCA sheet gives 20 kW on propane and 18 kW on natural gas. A licensed gas fitter sizes and runs the gas line. Connecting a generator permanently means notifying the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) of the work, and the transfer switch keeps generator power off the utility's lines. The base units come without a switch, so its rating is settled at the site visit, along with whether it covers the whole panel or a set of circuits.
The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) notification of work is filed before the work starts. When the installation is done, ESA inspects it and issues a Certificate of Acceptance once it passes. Where the unit burns natural gas or propane, a licensed gas fitter makes the gas connection. Where a meter or a service entrance switch is involved, the local utility does its part of the work.

It depends on the unit. KOHLER's spec sheets rate the 20RCA at 20 kW on propane and 18 kW on natural gas, and the 12RES at 12 kW and 10.4 kW. The 26RCA goes from 26 kW to 24 kW. Size the unit from the natural gas figure when the house is on the gas main.
The RCA units do in a Hamilton or Niagara winter. Their spec sheets recommend the cold weather kit below 0 °C and a battery heater below minus 17 °C. The 10RESV, 12RESV and 12RES sheets list no kit and recommend a carburetor heater for starting below 0 °C instead. The electrician can fit these parts when the unit goes in.
It marks a bundle with a KOHLER RXT automatic transfer switch included. The 10RESVL and 12RESVL come with a 100 A switch and a 12-space load centre, the 20RCAL and 26RCAL with a 200 A service entrance switch, and the 14RCAL with either one. The generator inside the bundle is the same unit as the model without the L.
It can. Each KOHLER spec sheet prints the smallest gas pipe for a given length of run, and the size grows as the run gets longer. For the 26RCA on natural gas, the sheet asks for a 1 inch pipe on an 8 m run and a 1 1/2 inch pipe on a 61 m run. Before the unit is connected, a licensed gas fitter looks at the meter and the existing line.
