Generac air-cooled home standby generators
This page lists Generac's current air-cooled home standby generators, from the Guardian Series and the newer cellular units to the Ecogen, with the figures Generac publishes for each model. Every unit runs on natural gas or propane and starts on its own when the power fails.
About the air-cooled home standby generators Family
Generac sells two air-cooled lines for homes side by side. The Guardian Series units connect over Wi-Fi and run the Evolution controller. The newer units come in Metro Gray, connect over a cellular link and run the Power Zone 200 controller, and their product pages compare their fuel use with the Guardian Series. The Ecogen 15 kW is a third air-cooled unit, which Generac built to pair with alternative energy sources and energy storage. On propane, the units in this table run from 10 kW to 28 kW.
Generac rates each unit on propane and on natural gas, and the natural gas figure is often lower. Its spec sheets measure sound at 7 m from the front of the unit at normal load, and the units here read 61 to 67 dBA. Three models come with a 100 A transfer switch that carries a chosen set of circuits. The bundles sold with Generac's 200 A service entrance switch are left out of this table, because Generac's spec sheets limit those packages to the United States.

Canadian Context
Most rows carry a Canadian mark as Generac prints it. The cellular spec sheets state that the unit carries certification for both the US and Canada. The Guardian sheets give a CETL or CUL listing to units sold on their own or with the limited circuit switch. The sheets for the Guardian 20 kW three-phase and the Ecogen show the UL 2200 listing only, so those two rows ask you to confirm availability with us. The certifications column shows the listing each sheet prints.
Generac's support article on cold weather accessories covers its Next Generation Series units of 10 to 28 kW and its Guardian Series units of 10 to 26 kW. It recommends a battery warmer and an oil filter warmer where temperatures regularly fall below 0 °C, and a breather warmer where heavy icing occurs. These warmers are sold separately. Every spec sheet behind this table lists them as accessories, so the cold weather column reads yes on each row.
A house on the gas main should be sized from the natural gas column, since most of these units give less power on natural gas than on propane. The spec sheets also state the gas pressure each unit needs at its inlet and say the gas piping has to be sized for the unit at full load. A licensed gas fitter checks that. On the electrical side, the transfer switch keeps generator power from flowing back into the utility lines.
The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) notification of work is filed before the work starts. When the installation is done, ESA inspects it and issues a Certificate of Acceptance once it passes. Where the unit burns natural gas or propane, a licensed gas fitter makes the gas connection. Where a meter or a service entrance switch is involved, the local utility does its part of the work.

Open the PDFFrequently Asked Questions
It depends on the model. Generac's spec sheets rate the Guardian 22 kW at 22 kW on propane and 19.5 kW on natural gas, and the 28 kW cellular unit at 28 kW and 25 kW. The 14 kW Guardian gives 14 kW on either fuel. If your house runs on the gas main, size the generator from the natural gas figure.
Generac recommends a battery warmer and an oil filter warmer where temperatures regularly fall below 0 °C, and a breather warmer where heavy icing occurs. The warmers are sold separately from the generator, and the spec sheet of every model in this table lists them. The electrician who installs the unit can fit them during the same visit.
The amp rating is the most current the switch can carry. A 100 A switch, like the one sold with three models in this table, moves a chosen group of circuits to the generator. A service entrance rated switch sits between the meter and the main panel and can carry the whole house, so the utility may need to pull the meter while it goes in.
Sometimes. Generac's spec sheets say the gas piping has to be sized for the unit at full load, and they set the gas pressure the unit needs at its inlet. A larger generator burns more gas at full load, so a long pipe run or a small gas meter can fall short. A licensed gas fitter checks the meter, the pipe size and the length of the run, and replaces what cannot carry the load.
