KOHLER automatic transfer switches for homes
The single-phase RXT and RDT automatic transfer switches on KOHLER's switch listing, each with its rating, poles, enclosure and warranty as the two spec sheets give them, and links to those sheets.
About the automatic transfer switches Family
A transfer switch is wired in at the point where the grid supply, the generator and the home's circuits meet. If the grid goes down, it hands the house to the generator, and once the grid is back it hands the house back. The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) requires a transfer device on every standby generator connected permanently to a home's wiring, since the device keeps the generator's output off the utility's wires.
KOHLER lists two lines of these switches for homes. The RXT takes its orders from the generator and works only with a KOHLER generator that has the RDC2 or DC2 controller. The RDT carries its own MPAC 500 controller on the switch. On both spec sheets the model number spells out the build, and every model in the table is coded for 240 V at 60 Hz, with two poles, a solid neutral and a NEMA 3R aluminum enclosure. Some models add a breaker on the utility side so they can serve as the service entrance, and a few include a load centre for the backed-up circuits.

Canadian Context
Five of these switches have CSA in the name KOHLER's listing gives them, and the table lists those five for Canada. The other sixteen names print no Canadian mark, so they read Confirm availability with us. Both spec sheets say CSA certification can be had on some versions, and the RXT sheet adds that it must be chosen when the switch is ordered. We check the mark on the exact model number before ordering a switch for a home here.
On a service entrance model the utility side runs through a disconnect breaker inside the switch, which lets the switch take the place of the main breaker next to the meter. That work happens at the meter itself, so the local utility cuts the supply before it starts and restores it after. ESA requires a notification of work for any generator wired permanently into a house, and ESA's advice is to have a licensed electrical contractor install it.
The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) notification of work is filed before the work starts. When the installation is done, ESA inspects it and issues a Certificate of Acceptance once it passes. Where the unit burns natural gas or propane, a licensed gas fitter makes the gas connection. Where a meter or a service entrance switch is involved, the local utility does its part of the work.

The RXT is run by the generator. It works only with a KOHLER generator that has the RDC2 or DC2 controller, and that controller handles the transfer and can show the utility voltage. The RDT has its own MPAC 500 controller on the switch, with LED fault lights, a test button and a weekly exercise of 20 minutes. Both lines are two-pole switches for a 240 V home service.
